The Vegan Life

"We're not that different, you and me."

People who choose to fully cut out animal products do so for reasons that vary from ethics, health, and the environment. Many choose the way of life for a variety of reasons and promptings. If you are a vegan and find the way of life isolated, have anxiety concerning your food, are dealing with depression, or just want support in general concerning your diet or any other aspect of life contact us today to schedule your first appointment. I treat patients from all around California in the office and through secure online sessions for vegan mental health awareness and support.

Being vegan in a non-vegan world can sometimes feel isolating, fearful, and completely exhausting. Does the thought of institutionalized animal exploitation prompt you to seek therapy for depression, anxiety, relationship issues and sometimes, trauma? Are the responses of family and friends dismissive of you and/or the issue: i.e. “there are more important things to worry about”, “you’re being way too sensitive”, or “get a life!’?” Do you want to feel understood by someone who really gets it? You may trust a vegan therapist more than a non-vegan therapist.

Everyone experiences bouts of anxiety and depression; however, the choice to become an ethical and environmental vegan intensifies the issues. This is not even to mention the decision to exercise your right to be a voice for the voiceless through some manner of animal rights activism.
According to an article in Psychology Today, studies have shown a connection between veganism and increased depression. The exact reasons are theorized. But the connection cannot be denied, statistically. At Holistic Vegan Therapy you will find support for vegan mental health from a therapist who practices veganism himself. A good therapist does not have to have the same values and mindset as their patient to understand their problems and to provide valuable feedback to facilitate growth and healing. However, when it comes to veganism talking to someone who is on the same path can help as we navigate a world where most people do not see the issue with the same mindset.
I understand what it means to be surrounded by people who have yet to make the connection. No doubt you have had the courage to ask hard questions like "how do I heal from what's missing in my personal relationships?" and "How do I help others better understand me?" Together, we will uncover communication and relationship patterns, learn how to use the mind and body to more effectively manage anxiety and depression; and many of your other concerns will get the attention they deserve.
You're one step closer to healing relationships and discovering your tribe!

Why Me, a Vegan Therapist?

As a person who has sought general counseling in the past, I understand the importance of empathy in the therapeutic process. It is the ability to truly step into someone else's shoes and imagine their experiences that creates the connection necessary for growth and healing. But as a vegan, I have found that this empathy can be hard to come by when working with a therapist who does not share my ethical beliefs.

It's not just about finding someone who understands the basics of veganism, though that is important. It's about finding someone who has experienced the same emotional struggles and conflicts that come with living in a non-vegan world. Someone who knows what it's like to feel like an outsider, to struggle with feelings of guilt and despair, and to navigate complex social situations with grace and confidence.

In my search for a vegan therapist, I have found that many non-vegan therapists simply cannot understand these experiences on a deep level. It's not their fault, of course, but it does create a barrier to effective therapy. How can someone truly empathize with you if they cannot imagine what it's like to be in your shoes?

This is why I believe that working with a vegan therapist is so important. Not only do they understand the ethical implications of our choices, but they have lived through many of the same challenges and conflicts that we face on a daily basis. They can provide the kind of compassionate and understanding support that is essential for true healing and growth.

Of course, finding a vegan therapist can be challenging, depending on where you live and what resources are available. But for those of us who are committed to our ethical beliefs and our mental health, it is worth the effort. By working with a vegan therapist, we can create a safe and supportive space where we can truly be ourselves, without fear of judgment or misunderstanding.

Of course, your therapist doesn't have to share everything in common with you — but when it comes to your core values of animal rights, sustainability, wellness, and compassion for all sentient creatures, it can be hard to work in a deep way with someone who hasn't made the connection with what's happening and humanity's imperative to act. That's where I come in.
